Existential Zach

Wasn’t able to blog again yesterday. Blame Zach. Or more precisely, blame Chip Baskets, a struggling clown with big aspirations, played with convincing glumness by Zach Galifianakis. How in hell did this show elude my radar for a year? Needless to say, I have a lot of catching up to do. I watched the first two episodes last night, and would’ve loved a third serving, but it was already past 1 a.m. on a workday night, and I needed my beauty sleep.

As the poster hints, Zach in Baskets is light years away from the Zack in The Hangover films. Which is to say, it’s not likely the Zach a lot of people want to see. Chip Baskets is a sad-ass bloke. He is an underachiever in a family of achievers, has a French wife who doesn’t love him, and roller-blades his way to his rodeo clown gig where his only friend is a Juggalo. He is also always plagued with money problems, and has to live with his mom after getting evicted from his apartment. His only hangover is his failure to become a professional clown.

Still, jokes undermine the drama. I mean, how can a show with a Juggalo not funny? Or a mother role played by a man? Or — shit! — Zach Galifianakis on roller-blades?

Will try to catch the rest of season one this weekend. This and Legion are making me excited for my two-day break.
